When you’re planning a wedding, party, corporate event or special celebration, there are so many decisions to make- and choosing live music can sometimes feel a little confusing.
You might see options such as string quartet, string trio, string duo or solo violinist with backing tracks, all with different prices attached. But what actually is the difference? And why does the price change depending on how many musicians you book?
We thought we’d explain exactly what each option means, so you can choose the ensemble that’s right for your event- and understand what you’re getting for your money.
What is a String Quartet?
A string quartet is made up of four professional musicians:
Two violinists
One viola player
One cellist
Together, these four instruments create the classic, rich string sound that you often hear at weddings, ceremonies, corporate events, drinks receptions and formal celebrations.
The advantage of having four musicians is that the music can be arranged across four individual parts, creating a wonderfully full and layered sound. You get the melody, harmonies, bass lines and all the little musical details working together.
A quartet is a fantastic choice if you want that big, luxurious and traditional string sound.
It is also worth remembering that when you book a quartet, you aren't simply paying for "one group". You are booking four professional musicians, each bringing their own instrument, experience, preparation and performance to your event.

What is a String Trio?
A string trio consists of three musicians: two violinists and a cellist.
This combination gives you a lovely balance between the beautiful, soaring sound of two violins and the warmth and depth of the cello.
With three musicians, you still get a completely live string arrangement, but with a slightly smaller sound than a quartet.
A trio can be an excellent middle ground if you love the sound of a string quartet but have a smaller venue, a more intimate event or a slightly smaller budget.
And importantly, it is still three live musicians performing for you- not a recording.
Best for:
Smaller weddings, ceremonies, corporate events, private parties, intimate venues, drinks receptions and dinners.
What is a String Duo?
A string duo is made up of two musicians.
This might be two violins, or a combination such as violin and cello, depending on the music and the style you are looking for.
With only two musicians, the arrangement is naturally more stripped back and intimate. But that doesn't mean it lacks impact.
In fact, a duo can be absolutely beautiful for a ceremony, drinks reception or special celebration, particularly when you want the music to complement the atmosphere rather than dominate it.
The biggest difference is simply the number of musicians involved. You're getting two real musicians, playing live, right there at your event.
Best for:
Intimate weddings and ceremonies, smaller venues, private parties, dinners, drinks receptions, corporate events and background music.
What about a Solo Violinist with Backing Tracks?
This is where things can sometimes get a little confusing!
A solo violinist with backing tracks is exactly that- one live violinist.
The violinist performs the melody live, while professionally produced backing music provides some of the harmony and accompaniment that would otherwise be played by additional musicians.
This means you can achieve a much bigger sound with just one musician.
For example, rather than hearing one violin playing completely alone, you might hear the violin melody accompanied by piano, strings or other instrumental parts through the backing track.
There is also a choice when it comes to how your solo violinist is heard.
Acoustic or Mic'd Up?
For smaller, more intimate settings, your violinist can perform acoustically, allowing the natural sound of the violin to fill the space.
For larger venues, outdoor events or occasions with lots of guests and background noise, the violinist can be mic'd up and amplified. This makes sure everyone can hear the performance clearly, wherever they are.
So even with a solo violinist, you can choose the setup that works best for your venue and event.
It's a very popular option because you get the visual impact and emotion of a live violin performance, while keeping the number of musicians- and therefore the overall cost- down.

Weddings, ceremonies, private parties, corporate events, drinks receptions, dinners, proposals, smaller celebrations and occasions where you want the impact of live violin with a streamlined setup.
So, Why Do the Prices Differ?
This is probably the most important thing to understand.
When you compare a string quartet with a solo violinist, you're not comparing the same service at two different prices.
You're comparing four live musicians with one live musician.
Every musician is a professional who has spent years learning their instrument and developing their performance skills. Before your event, there is also preparation involved- arranging music, rehearsing (if required), travelling to your venue, setting up and performing for you on the day.
So, for example:
String Quartet = 4 musicians
String Trio = 3 musicians
String Duo = 2 musicians
Solo Violinist + Backing Tracks = 1 musician
The more musicians involved, the more individual performances, instruments, preparation and logistics are involved.
And that's why the price changes.
Which Ensemble Should You Choose?
There isn't necessarily a "best" option- it really depends on the atmosphere you want to create, the size of your venue and the type of event you're hosting.
